Art and Print: The Curwen Story
Alan Powers
Set up by the Reverend John Curwen in 1863, the Curwen Press was initially concerned with printing sheet music, it made its name in the early 20th century as a printer of superb quality limited edition books illustrated by leading figures of British Art. During the late 1950's Curwen set up a studio to produce artists prints, which attracted leading lights from the art scene which are still produced today.
Charting the history of both publishing and print making at Curwen, Alan Powers looks at the role the Press played in shaping ideas of book design from the 1920's onwards.
