A Classical House
This is a building with a remarkable history. It began life as a tiny picturesque summerhouse in a centre of a planned estate designed by Capability Brown, on an extraordinary site overlooking the sea.
In the 1950s the major house at the centre of the estate was compulsorily purchased and demolished. The summer house became the family’s seat and a programme of extensions and alterations (that had started in the 19th century) were carried out to form a large family house in a simple neo-Georgian style. The interiors were designed in a startling style by David Hicks.
Now, for a new generation, we have prepared a masterplan for the comprehensive remodeling and extension of the building to create a house that retains all the significant interiors and character of the original, but relating more closely to the original demolished country house. We will start an engagement with planning officers in 2016.
