A Villa in St. John’s Wood
In 2015 we were approached by a developer who had obtained approval for a very large replacement dwelling on a fine site in St John’s Wood. The scheme allowed for an extensive house with considerable below ground accommodation. The client, however, was unhappy with the internal layouts and with much of the façade design and detailing.
The client was seeking a house that built upon this approved scheme, yet would appear to be completely and convincingly traditional within the street scene. We developed a proposal for a severe, restrained façade in the Greek revival style. Windows were overscaled to help reduce the visual appearance of the building, and very careful use of simple detailing applied to create a design that belongs to the local idiom of the Eyre Estate.
At the same time we took forward a complete redesign of internal layouts over 6 floors. The revised scheme was welcomed by local amenity societies and neighbours. Construction will complete in Winter 2018.
